Keep the kids learning over the summer while still enjoying the time off. Here are some websites with plenty of vacation education ideas.
familyeducation.com
This site had a good depth of resources for parents, broken down by age group. A good resource for printable worksheets and lessons, seasonal family activites and projects.
momsminivan.com
A homespun site built and maintained by a former high school teacher hoping to make long road trips a little more enjoyable. Put away the video games and DVD’s and get the whole family involved in some of these educational and enjoyable games.
funbrain.com
Here’s one I wish I’d discovered before I recorded the report. Dozens of educational games geared mainly for younger kids. Math Baseball and Grammar Gorillas are just two of the games. Also, lots of resources for teachers and parents, like a game finder to locate the most appropriate games for subjects you’re interested in.
Summer Reading
And I promised some suggestions for summer reading resources. There are so many sites out there with lists for all kinds of interests.
www.rif.org/summer/
The Reading is Fundamental site has a variety of resources in addition to reading lists. There’s a free reading club to join, a summer reading screensaver, even tips to prevent getting bored with reading.
www.education-world.com/summer_reading/
This site breaks down its suggestions by grade level for kids K-8.
www.kathimitchell.com/summread.htm
And a list of lists. This site aggregates summer reading suggestions from schools and organizations around the country.
